Evan Huffman signs neo-pro contract with Astana

Cal Giant-Specialized sends another rider to the WorldTour in the California-based U23 time trial champion

American Evan Huffman confirmed on Thursday that he had signed a neo-pro contract with Astana in 2013.

Huffman is the most recent in a line of California Giant-Specialized elite riders to move into the professional ranks. Andrew Talansky (Garmin-Sharp) is the most well-known product of the development squad headed by Anthony Gallino and Rod Hernandez, which has also produced U.S. criterium champion Ken Hanson (Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies) and Max Jenkins (Competitive Cyclist).

Morgan Hill, California-based bike sponsor Specialized is a sponsor for Cal Giant and Astana.

The 22-year-old from Elk Grove, California, took to Twitter to make the announcement, ending weeks of speculation over his future:

It’s true, I have signed for 2 years with @AstanaTeam… I’m very happy to be part of such a great team and have to especially thank @iamspecialized for their continued support.

Huffman is the reigning U.S. U23 time trial champion and won a stage at the SRAM Tour of the Gila in 2012.
