Contador, Valverde, Rodriguez make Spanish worlds team

Spain announces loaded roster for climbers' contest at the world championships in Florence, Italy

MADRID (AFP) — Two-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador has been selected in the nine-man Spanish team for the UCI Elite Road World Championships in Florence, Italy, next week.

The 30-year-old Saxo-Tinkoff rider is joined by last year’s bronze medalist in the elite road race, Alejandro Valverde, and Joaquim Rodríguez, who finished fourth behind third-placed Valverde in the recently completed Vuelta a España.

Contador is one of only two members the team not to have ridden in the three-week Spanish tour, having taken a break following a disappointing fourth-place finish in the Tour de France in July.

Jose Herrada, Jonathan Castroviejo, Samuel Sánchez, Egoi Martinez, Daniel Moreno, and Luis León Sánchez make up the rest of the squad chosen by national selector Javier Minguez.

Luis León Sánchez and Castroviejo will also start the individual time trial on Wednesday, September 25..
