Chiara Pierobon dies at 22 on eve of Women’s World Cup race

Italian rider Chiara Pierobon of the Top Girls Fassa Bortolo UCI Women's Team dies at 22 prior to an expected start at the Sparkassen Giro

Chiara Pierobon (Top Girls Fassa Bortolo) died suddenly Saturday while en route to the Sparkassen Giro, the seventh round of the UCI Women’s World Cup. She was 22.

Pierobon reportedly was feeling unwell as the Italian team traveled to Bochum, Germany, where the race will take place on Sunday, and was taken to a hospital. According to the team website, she passed away shortly after of a suspected pulmonary embolism.

UCI president Brian Cookson expressed his condolences via Twitter, saying: “I am shocked to hear about the death of Chiara Pierobon. Our deepest thoughts are with her family and friends.”
