Kris Boeckmans (Lotto-Soudal), who crashed hard in the Vuelta’s eighth stage, will remain in a medically induced coma for at least the next week.
Doctors had initially put Boeckmans into the induced coma Saturday, after the 28-year-old Belgian was taken the hospital following the crash. According to a team press release, doctors tried to take Kris Boeckmans out of the induced coma Monday, but lung injuries made it too difficult for Boeckmans to breathe sufficiently independently, leading doctors to place him into an induced coma again, for at least the next seven days.
The team release characterized the situation as “stable.” At the moment, Boeckmans’ swollen pulmonary tissue is preventing proper oxygen, intake and doctors are now waiting for the swelling to disappear slowly in a natural way.
