Best of Redlands: Saturn sweep

We go to the VeloNews archives for a look at the 2003 Saturn men's team and their suffocating spring campaign

Editor’s Note: This week marks the 27th anniversary of the Redlands Bicycle Classic in Redlands, California. As the race opens today, we take a look into the VeloNews archives at a selection of the best moments from the U.S. domestic season opener. Today’s pick: the 2003 men’s race, when Chris Horner, Nathan O’Neill and Tom Danielson smothered the field for Saturn.

Saturn was the undisputed top dog in the domestic peloton in 2003. Led by Chris Horner, Nathan O’Neill, Charles Dionne and Tom Danielson, the squad ripped through the spring, winning at the Tour de Langkawi, Redlands and the Tour of Georgia. In this retrospective, VeloNews editors looked back at the squad’s run through the first six months of the year. In their most dominant statement of the year, Horner, O’Neill and Danielson left the peloton behind on the final-day Sunset Ridge stage at Redlands and swept the day and the final general classification.
