The SRAM Tour of the Gila has been added to the UCI America Tour calendar for 2012.

The category 2.2 race, scheduled May 2-6 in and around Silver City, New Mexico, will provide a final tune-up for racers bound for the Amgen Tour of California May 13-20.

“The SRAM Tour of the Gila is one of the most challenging and iconic stage races in the U.S., so we are very pleased it will be a part of the UCI America Tour in 2012,” said USA Cycling chief operating officer Sean Petty.

Race director Jack Brennan thanked Silver City, Grant County, the state of New Mexico and title sponsor SRAM for helping the Gila step up onto the international stage.

“We are extremely excited to bring international bicycle racing to New Mexico,” said Brennan. “SRAM recognized what this race could become and they have continuously encouraged the Tour of the Gila to pursue international status.”

The SRAM Tour of the Gila is also part of USA Cycling’s National Racing Calendar (NRC).

Last year’s victors were Francisco Mancebo (Realcyclist.com) and Clara Hughes Pactimo).
