Organizers of the Tour of Ireland have canceled the 2010 edition of the stage race, which had been scheduled for August 18-22.

The organizers blamed the cancellation on ‘economic conditions’ and said the race will return in 2011.

“Despite significant commercial and public sector funding, current economic conditions have meant that the additional investment required to make the event viable has not been forthcoming in time for this season,” read a statement by Alan Rushton of Tour of Ireland Cycling Events Limited.

The race dates to 1953 but has been mothballed and revived several times over the decade. It was known as the Nissan Classic in the 1980s and early 1990s. Most recently, it returned after a five years’ absence in 2007.

“We fully intend to bring it back for 2011 when the private sector environment is stronger,”  Rushton said.
