By Press Release
Bob Roll fans rejoice! THE TOUR DE FRANCE COMPANION is the essential guide to the world’s greatest sporting event, from former Tour de France racer and gonzo cycling journalist Bob Roll. It’s all here in a handy, comprehensive insider’s guide to the Tour de France, a sporting event that makes the Super Bowl look like a pajama party. Roll will cover everything from the yellow jersey to the broom wagon, the role of the peloton, and the most important behind-the-scenes aspect—food.
Bob Roll delivers the lowdown on the high-speed time trials, cyclists’ body and mind games, and even the secrets of how racers go to the bathroom without getting off their bikes. From what to watch to where to watch, from le depart to the finish line, the book is as jam-packed as the peloton on the flats.
THE TOUR DE FRANCE COMPANION covers the Tour in the colorful fashion typical of Bob Roll including these interesting topics:
A 2004 crib sheet, with stage outlines of the world’s most grueling 3-week cycling event, key dates, and a course map. An explanation and history of every jersey—yellow, green, and polka dot. Incredible feats, thrilling cycling moments, crashes and photo finishes of world-renowned Tour riders such as Eddy Merckx, Jacques Anquetil, Jan Ullrich, Marco Pantani, Miguel Indurain, Greg LeMond, and, of course, Lance Armstrong. The ultimate Tour de France timeline. The most memorable moments of Tour history. How Tour de France competitors recover after burning up to 9,000 calories a day. Analysis of bike technology, complete with comparisons of today’s aerodynamic gear to the prehistoric beasts of one hundred years ago. The curious honor of finishing last. Bob Roll’s unauthorized, unexpurgated Tour de France alphabet. Sixteen reasons why the Tour de France is better than the Super Bowl.
Bob Roll, known to racing fans as Bobke (boob-ka), is author of two books about the wild side of bicycle racing, Bobke and Bobke II, published by VeloPress. He is also a race bicycling commentator for the Outdoor Life Network. Roll is a former four-time Tour de France racer and a member of the U.S. cycling Hall of Fame. He is a former 7-Eleven, Motorola, and Z team racer. After 10 years as a roadie, Roll started his career as a professional mountain biker in 1992, eventually becoming the only road racer to ever grace the cover of Mountain Bike magazine.
