Monterey, California — MotionBased Technologies and Sea Otter Classic, the most celebrated cycling festival in North America, have teamed up to provide athletes with detailed course descriptions to train for races. Riders simply strap on their GPS devices and they’re instantly empowered with online performance analysis and mapping. The 15th annual Sea Otter Classic will be held this year on April 14-17, 2005, at the Laguna Seca Recreation Area, Monterey, California.

“We’re excited to partner with MotionBased Technologies,” says Frank Yohannan, president and CEO of Sea Otter Classic. “By offering our Sea Otter athletes the tools to train more efficiently, we expect the racing to be more competitive for the cyclists and more exciting for the fans. This is the perfect blend of technology with sport.”

“The Sea Otter Classic is the perfect venue to introduce the power of MotionBased’s GPS-enabled mapping service,” says Clark Weber, Co-founder of MotionBased Technologies. “By breaking down course specifics and simulating the route for each course in the race, we’re giving riders new-found ammo never used before in a race event.”

“I don’t want to ride without it,” says Mark Weir, 11–year veteran of Sea Otter. “The system keeps a detailed log of all the rides I do and stats like elevation, avg. and max speed, weather, mileage and more. These are great tools to use if you are a serious racer or geek. As for me, I am both. Another bonus is you can email activities to your friends to show them how much faster you are then them. Now that’s priceless.”

After tracking a ride with a GPS device, athletes can connect their device to a computer and upload the data to MotionBased. MotionBased then crunches numbers with complex algorithms to calculate time, distance, speed, and elevation metrics. The data is automatically retrieved and sent to the rider’s personal inbox at MotionBased.com where they name, classify, and add comments to the activity. Each activity an athlete does is stored in a personal online digest and is also added to the TrailNetwork, a growing database of routes created by the MotionBased community. Members can use the TrailNetwork to seek out similar routes in their region that match Sea Otter’s course specifics.

MotionBased uses a web platform over traditional software so that customers could analyze their workouts anytime, anywhere. In addition, it provides an easy platform for customers to share their workouts and potential new routes with friends, coaches, and competitors.

Nearly 10,000 professional and amateur athletes and over 50,000 spectators will attend the Sea Otter Classic. The outdoor cycling tradeshow will host over 250 vendors who showcase the latest trends and technologies in road cycling, mountain biking and recreational products and services. Over 200 international media representatives will report on the competitive action in over 20 professional and amateur events, including the Pro Road Stage Race, the Pro Mountain Bike Stage Race, and the Pro Gravity Omnium.

“I love the Sea Otter Classic,” says Marla Streb, 2003 national champion. “It’s a big Circus! It’s the best event of the year.”
