Spanish mountain biker Inaki Lejarreta dies after training accident

Spanish mountain biker Iñaki Lejarreta died on Sunday after being struck by a car while training.

The 29-year-old cross-country racer, a resident of Berriz who raced for Orbea, was cycling through the Basque town of Iurreta when the accident occurred at around 9:30 a.m. local time, according to the website diariovasco.com.

He was pronounced dead at the scene after resuscitation attempts failed.

Lejarreta competed in the 2008 Olympics and medaled three times as an elite at the Spanish national cross country championships, taking silver in 2011 and bronze in 2007 and 2012.
