After announcing the 2012 World Cup schedule last week, the UCI Management Committee announced that it has awarded the 2013 Mountain Bike World Championships to Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.  Pietermaritzburg has hosted two rounds — gravity and Olympic cross-country — of the World Cup in 2009 and in 2011. The 2012 season opener will be held in Pietermaritzburg as well.

Meanwhile, the UCI also approved the first four events of the new Mountain Bike Marathon series for 2011 – 2012. This series, which will be qualifying for the 2012 UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships, will begin after the 2011 mountain bike marathon worlds, which will be held in Montello, Italy on June 26.

The new series starts a week after the Montello event and runs two weeks prior to the 2012 MTB world championships in Ormans, France on Oct. 7, 2012. The remaining races in 2011 include the Adamello Bike in Ponte Di Legno, Italy, Sept. 18 and the Extreme Sur Loue in Omans, France on Oct. 2.
