The success of the first-ever Mellow Johnny’s Classic mountain bike race on Lance Armstrong’s Texas ranch in November could well translate into a national calendar event in early 2010.

An announcement on the Mellow Johnny’s web site Friday said that while details haven’t been ironed out, “We have made an application to host a National Calendar event at the Ranch on the weekend of May 29-30 2010.”

Mellow Johnny’s is the Austin, Texas bike shop co-owned by Armstrong. The Mellow Johnny’ Classic was announced in October 2009, with the 700 slots selling out in a number of days. The race was held on Nov. 22, with the husband and wife duo of Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski and Heather Irmiger winning their respective pro fields. Armstrong started the race, held on his 477-acre Juan Pelota Ranch in the Texas Hill Country, but flatted after the first lap.

As for the May 2010 race, event organizers said they will release a formal announcement and details on registration once final confirmation from USA Cycling is obtained.

“Suffice it to say we are looking forward to a putting on an even bigger and better event,” race organizers said on the Mellow Johnny’s site.

No word was given whether Armstrong will race in the May 29-30 event. He has committed to racing the Amgen Tour of California, which runs from May 16 to May 23.
