Reigning cross-country world champion Jose Antonio Hermida will race in his rainbow jersey for the first later this month at the Andalucía Bike Race in Spain.
The veteran Spanish World Cup racer will be the ambassador at the stage race, held Feb. 27 through March 4. Hermida, who races for The Multivan-Merida team, will compete with his teammate Ralph Näf. Last year Hermida raced the Absa Cape Epic in South Africa withi Rudi Van Houts. Hermida said he likes taking on stage races in the early part of the race calendar.
“Races with several days of competition are ideal in this part of the season,” Hermida said. “I love this type of events, but once the real XC season starts it is difficult to manage both things.”
In 2010, Hermida and Van Houts won the eighth and final stage of the Cape Epic.
“It has always helped me to increase my level before the World Cups,” he said. “For sure, the ABR (Andalucía Bike Race) will be a great experience as well, being held in an area of Spain with ideal temperatures for this time of year. ”
Hermida, who hails from Puigcerdà, said, “it is an honor to be chosen as an ambassador for the race. From my side, I will try to perform an interesting competition and help to promote its name, both nationally and internationally. Seeing the infrastructure and excitement of the organization, for sure the ABR will grow quickly.”
