Tokyo Joe’s racer Gretchen Reeves and Sho Air/Specialized racer Sam Jurekovic posted victories in the Crankworx Colorado cross-country, part of the Winter Park Mountain Bike Race Series, on Aug. 1.

The 24-mile course was by far the toughest of the series to date, with heavy rains from the days before adding to the difficulty.

Reeves’ winning time of 2:05:58 put her comfortably ahead of runner-up and teammate Erin Huck. Huck crossed the line in 2:12:30, four minutes ahead of third place rider Karen Hogan (Chipotle/Titus).

Jurekovic sprinted away from the deep men’s field right from the start, opening up a minute lead in the first couple miles of the race then holding on the rest of the way. His winning time was 1:43:58, with Jay Henry (Tokyo Joe’s) in second at 1:44:54 and Brad Bingham (Moots Cycles) in third at 1:49:56.

The cross-country was part of Winter Park Resort’s Crankworx Colorado free-ride mountain bike festival, held July 30 through Aug. 2.

“This was our biggest year so far with the largest slopestyle crowd ever on Saturday,” said Jenn deBerge, Winter Park’s communications director. “Despite the weather, we hosted over 1,100 athletes in five disciplines over the course of four days. We also had two record setting days in our bike park on Saturday and Sunday.”

In the super downhill, Specialized/Red Bull racer Rebecca Rusch and Maverick racer Mike West claimed. Featuring a LeMans style start on the fast super-d course, Rusch and West achieved their winning results by the closest of margins.

Rusch’s winning time of 13:40 just edged out runner-up Sage Wilderman (Totally Wired Cyclery). Procycling’s  Sharon McDowell Larsen finished third at 14:19.

West, meanwhile, came off the line in fourth after the LeMans start, but he hammered up the short climb to get the lead before the descent. “The guys were on my tail all the way down, I had to work really hard,” said West. “I’m lucky to have been able to hold them off, that was a tight race, fun course.”

The Winter Park Mountain Bike Series continues on Aug.15 with the Mary Jane mountain top circuit course.  Full race results from Crankworx Colorado and details on the August 15 race are available at www.epicsingletrack.com.
