Registration for the second Mellow Johnny’s Classic on Lance Armstrong’s Texas ranch in May will be split into two dates.
April 15 is the first sign-up day for the May 29 race — held over the Memorial Day weekend. May 1 is the second registration date.
The inaugural Mellow Classic in November sold out in a week on short notice, so organizers expect the event to fill even quicker this time as the race is now earlier in the season and part of USA Cycling’s Pro Cross-Country Tour.
According to the race Web site, the April 15 registration is a new program for racers who want to support Livestrong, Armstrong’s cancer-fighting foundation. Starting April 15, 200 spots will be available for people who want the Mellow Classic to be their Livestrong-supported event. Participants who select the option will promise to raise a minimum of $250 and will be recognized as a Livestrong supporting participant during the race weekend.
On May 1, the standard registration will open at bikereg.com.
Meanwhile, race organizers will be offering three pre-ride dates that are open to racers and anyone else who wants to ride the course, situated on Armstrong’s Juan Pelota Ranch in Dripping Springs, Texas, outside of Austin. People who want to take part in the pre-rides must sign up in advance through bikereg.com. Registration for the pre-rides opens on the Wednesday prior to the weekend day they fall on so weather and course conditions can be assessed.
