A World Cup Diary from Todd Wells
World Cups are so easy. They start out like it’s a one-minute race and then they just get faster and faster. The course at St, Wendel was generally dry, with just a few power-sapping, soft, muddy sections. Well for me, some highlights from the race were definitely the pictures of naked chicks taped to the paved climb at about 1km into the race. I had an alright race going. Jeremy and I were riding together for the first half of the race but then I stacked it on a descent and he rode off the front of the group we were in… and I rode off the back. Jeremy ended up 15th which is a good result for a U.S. guy and I think he got pretty close to the next group. I ended up 31st after having a bit of a mental breakdown after a few crashes.
The defending World Cup champion, Filip Meirhaeghe, decided an inner tube was too much to carry and ended up walking a flat back into the start area after being in the front group.
Me? I got stuck behind some stinky Euro’ that smelled like he hadn’t showered for days. That was really nice.
Adam Craig finished about 80th, just out of the points and Decker didn´t have such a great race.
Other than that, it was just another World Cup. There were tons of spectators smoking cigarettes and drinking beer. RockShox totally hooked up the U.S. guys and let us pit out of their trailer, thanks.
Bart junior was also spotted at the race, as well as Liska and Petra. Kevin Kelly, Craig, Decker and I are off to dinner and we are heading to Scotland Monday night.
I wonder what Gully is doing right now….
