SAECO-TEAM PRESS RELEASE – Rome – July 27, 2002After being absolved today, Gilberto Simoni
will start racing again on Sunday in HamburgThe favourable ending to the case involving Gilberto Simoni, with theannouncement today by the Italian Disciplinary Commission of the ItalianCycling Federation of his complete absolution, has finally ended an extremelydifficult and delicate moment for the whole Saeco-Longoni Sport team eventhough they always tried to face things in a rational and balanced manner. It’s pleasing to see how the decision of the disciplinary organ of theItalian Cycling Federation , coming just a few hours after the decisionof the Public prosecutor in Trento, Mr Giardina, has finally determinedthat the rider comes out of the whole affair with a clear concience whichwill be understood by public opinion. Both the ordinary judicial system and the sporting judicial system haverecognised that the event was an episode that did never place under discussionthe ethical and sporting honesty of the rider.
However the “case” which involved Gilberto Simoni and as a consequencethe Saeco-Longoni Sport team remains serious considering the effects thatit caused the team and its racing activities. But this will not affectthe recovery of a relationship based on good faith that was establishedwhen the two parties signed a contract last winter. As a result the team, along with the agreement of its sponsors, hasdecided to revoke the suspension of Gilberto Simoni and will allow himto immediately return to racing. His official return will be on SundayAugust 4 at the HEW Cyclassic Cup in Hamburg, Germany. Simoni will thenmake his return to racing in Italy on Wednesday August 7 at the GP Camaiore. His racing programme will be planned with the aim of him competing in theVuelta Espana in September.Rome, July 27, 2002.
