Giant & Northstar-at-Tahoe Seek Athletes

Ride Giant/Ride Northstar MTB development grassroots sponsorship program aims to help athletes in California

Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort and Giant Bicycles are looking for a few riders to give and little and get a lot.

For the 2011 season, Northstar, located in Truckee, California near Lake Tahoe’s north shore, and Giant will continue the Ride Giant/Ride Northstar development mountain bike grassroots sponsorship program for both local and regional competitive mountain bike athletes in California.

The sponsorship program is a curriculum focusing on helping athletes reach their full potential at race events, said Justin Swett, the Ride Giant/Ride Northstar team director. Swett said Giant and Northstar are looking for “humble athletes” in the Cat 2 and Cat 1 level categories who race downhill to cross-country.

Where prospective riders give a little is through a special pricing sponsorship package. Selected athletes will have the opportunity to purchase a sponsorship package at a preferred price featuring the choice of a Giant DH or XC bicycle and:

• Coaching Clinic Team Camp Weekend April 23-24, 201
• Comped Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort Mountain Bike Park Season Pass
• Comped Entry Fees at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort Sanctioned Competitions
• Additional benefit opportunities with participating sponsors, such as Giro, Fox Racing Shox, Oakley and WTB.

New for 2011, Ride Giant/Ride Northstar will host a team training camp for its team riders with professional trainer Tim Evens who has worked with notable athletes such as Tour de France cyclist Levi Leipheimer, and mountain bike national champions Adam Craig and Carl Decker. Swett said the team camp will educate athletes on the importance of core strength training, race strategy, bicycle fit, fitness training and bicycle setup among many other key topics.

The program has proven to be successful for current riders like Nate Byrom, who climbed the ranks from a junior competitor to the pro level. At 20, Byrom has a promising future ahead due to the foundation that has been built by the Ride Giant/Ride Northstar program, Swett said.

To apply for the Ride Giant / Ride Northstar grassroots sponsorship program, interested athletes should submit a cover letter with what they think their definition is of mountain biking and competing, and what defines them as an athlete and a mountain biker.

Along with the cover letter, athletes must send a resume. In the resume, athletes are asked to include races they have competed in along with accomplished results.

Resume and cover letter information can be sent via E-mail to the founding director, Justin Swett, at
