Wilco Kelderman, a young grand tour prospect from the Netherlands, will join Sunweb – Giant (currently known as Giant – Alpecin) for 2017 and 2018. The 25-year-old will bolster the German team’s roster, which includes French climber Warren Barguil and his fellow Dutchman Tom Dumoulin, who came close to winning the 2015 Vuelta.
In his eighth year with the LottoNL – Jumbo organization (formerly Belkin, Blanco, and Rabobank), Kelderman finished fourth overall at Ruta del Sol, fifth in the Tour de France’s young rider competition, and second overall at Tour du Poitou Charentes. His best grand tour result came two years ago in the Giro, where he was seventh overall.
“I am very pleased to join Team Giant – Alpecin, taking the next step in my career,” Kelderman said. “The team allows me to grow towards a role as a leader for the grand tours, using a gradual approach. They are successful with their philosophy, with an emphasis on science and technology, like the focus on being experts in time trial performance, for example. I can learn from the experience they have, as well as from guys like Tom [Dumoulin] and Michael [Matthews], who are from the same generation and having paved the road for me.”
Kelderman is slated to race the Grand Prix races of Quebec and Montreal, Friday and Sunday in Canada.
