Geox-TMC rider Daniele Colli is getting the backing from his new team following the discovery of a benign tumor in his knee.
Team manager Mauro Gianetti the 28-year-old Italian will keep his spot on the squad as he recovers from treatment.
“Everyone is very happy to know that the tumor he has is benign. We knew of his situation and were always at his side, but it was obviously something personal that had to be made public by him, logically,” Gianetti said. “The most important thing now is that he gets over this calmly, because all people in the team will be waiting for him for all the time he needs.”
Geox-TMC is meeting this weekend for the first time during a four-day camp in northern Spain, the new squad’s first get-together since learning that it would be not be racing in the ProTour league next season.
The team is undergoing medical and physical checks as well as getting fit for clothing, shoes and bikes. The team’s 22 riders will also plan their racing schedules for the upcoming season.
The squad will debut its 2011 season at the Tour de San Luis in Argentina on January 18-24.
