Vital MTB reports that Stevie Smith, winner of the 2013 UCI downhill mountain bike World Cup, died after suffering a brain injury in an enduro motorcycle crash.
The 26-year-old, nicknamed “The Canadian Chainsaw Massacre,” won DH World Cups in Leogang, Austria, Hafjell, Norway, and Mont-Sainte-Anne, Canada in his dominant 2013 season, when he won the series. Since then, Smith suffered numerous injuries, but he looked to be on the rebound this season, finishing second at the Lourdes, France World Cup.
Friends and family have started a Stevie Smith Legacy Fund, a Tiann Smith initiative, assisting talented young athletes. They are also organizing a celebration of Smith’s life, to be held May 21 at 1 p.m. at the Vancouver Island Convention Centre in Nanaimo, B.C.
