Viatcheslav Ekimov could find himself with a gold medal following startling admissions by Tyler Hamilton that he doped to win the 2004 Olympic time trial championship.
Hamilton said he has notified the IOC about returning his gold medal, but it remains unclear if silver medalist Ekimov will receive the gold medal.
Speaking to Norwegian TV2 before the start of Saturday’s stage at the Giro d’Italia, where Ekimov is working as a sport director for RadioShack, Ekimov said he doesn’t know what’s going to happen.
“My life isn’t going to change with getting the medal,” Ekimov told TV2.
Ekimov also called Hamilton’s allegations that he saw Lance Armstrong dope as “crazy.”
“Allegations? I cannot comment on that. This is just speaking. I find it crazy,” Ekimov said. “These guys, for some reason, get lost. How can you trust people who get lost? I cannot trust what they say. I have no idea why they do that. … Every day there are some reports. I don’t read the reports. I am sick of it.”
