Cyclocross world champion Zdenek Stybar has again fallen victim to the curse of the rainbow jersey. Stybar crashed and injured his shoulder in Wednesday’s Kermiscross van Ardooie.
Stybar underwent examinations following the crash. The X-rays showed ligament ruptures as the result of a Grade 3 AC joint dislocation on the right shoulder. Surgery to stabilize the AC joint and repair the ruptured ligaments was successful. His Omega Pharma-Quick Step team reports he will leave the hospital Friday.
This setback comes as Stybar was starting to show signs of life, after a long recovery from a painful crash at the Eneco Tour that left him with severe facial injuries. Coincidentally, that August crash also occurred in Ardooie, Belgium.
However, with this latest injury, it seems that Stybar will wrap up 2014 on a disappointing note.
