World cyclocross champion Sven Nys and Belgian countryman Sven Vanthourenhout will start Wednesday’s G.P. Sven Nys in Baal, Belgium, under their new banner of Crelan-AA Drink, Trek announced on Monday. As had been widely speculated, Nys’ new team will ride the Wisconsin-based brand’s bikes.
“The partnership with Trek and the work we put into the bikes is another dimension for me in cyclocross,” Nys said in a press release. “I am really happy to be part of the family of Trek and to do something special with them.”
Belgian television station Sporza reported on Monday that Nys would continue racing until 2016, when the two-time world champion will be 40 years old.
Bontrager will provide “equipment and components” to the team, according to the press release. Trek has worked closely with athletes including World Cup leader Katie Compton in recent years to develop the Crocket cyclocross frame. The brand sponsors the U.S.-based Trek Cyclocross Collective Team for which Compton rides.
“When we really dedicated ourselves to cyclocross a few years back, we had a strategy to support racing with the full commitment of our product development team and partner with some of the biggest names in the sport,” Trek’s Matt Shriver said. “This move in particular is a huge step for us, and one that we are really excited to take.”
