Groenendaal wins Jaarmarktcross

Dutchman Richard Groenendaal (Rabobank) won Thursday’s Jaarmarktcross Niel, the second round of the Gazet van Antwerpen Trofee Veldrijden, and took the series lead as well. Groenendaal crossed the line with a large margin on runner-up Erwin Vervecken (Fidea), who outsprinted Sven Vanthourenhout (Quick Step), Wim Jacobs (Fidea) and Ben Berden (Saey-Deschacht). MrBookmaker.com teammates Davy Commeyne and Mario De Clercq launched the first attack, but Nys chased back up, bringing part of the peloton with him, forming a 12-man lead group.

Six laps before the finish Groenendaal gave it the gas just as Nys flatted, and two laps later he was good and gone, building a 30-second lead that he held until the finish.
