’Cross nationals arrives in snowy Bend

While Oregon is a hotbed for American cyclocross, the temperatures in Bend, Oregon, during the USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships will be far from “hot.”

While Oregon is a hotbed for American cyclocross, the temperatures in Bend, Oregon during the USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships will be far from “hot.” The mid-30s temperatures at the USGP finale in Portland, Oregon, were just the beginning of a dropping thermometer.

It's going to be classic winter cyclocross in Bend this weekend.
It's going to be classic winter cyclocross in Bend this weekend.

Bend sits around an elevation of 3,600ft and is nestled on the Eastern slope of the Cascade Mountain Range, which essentially divides Oregon into a humid Western half and an arid Eastern half. The higher elevation and dryer air makes it possible for the temperature to reach the sub-zero and single digit lows that Bend has been experiencing during the past week.

The temperature is expected to warm slightly during the national championship festival but not much more than rising to the freezing mark, which begins on Thursday, December 10 with men and women’s B categories and the masters men 55 to 70+ categories and concludes on Sunday December 13 with the collegiate and elite category events. However, the warming temperatures are expected to bring precipitation in the form of snow, which will provide cold and sloppy racing conditions.

It is cyclocross season, anyway, and these are the conditions for which crazed ’crossers around the world lust for and that give cyclocross the reputation that it has for braving the wicked, winter conditions.

Weather aside, the 2009 U.S. national cyclocross championships are expected to be the biggest to date. According to USA Cycling, over 1,600 unique riders will make over 2,000 starts to compete across 30 age and ability categories. In addition, there are plenty of cycling related arts, music and beer drinking events that will take place through out the festival.

Stay tuned for complete coverage of U.S. national cyclocross championship this week. Below is a schedule of racing and festival events that will be taking place in Bend, Oregon between December 10th and 13th.
