2015 Velo Awards: Cant is women’s Cyclocross Rider of Year
“Dominant” isn’t a strong enough word for Sanne Cant’s run through the 2014–15 ’cross season. She was the World Cup series winner, European champion, Belgian national champion, and number-one ranked rider in the world. Her only hiccup came at worlds, where she finished a heartbreaking second to Pauline Ferrand-Prévot.
Cant was clearly upset on the podium and would later apologize for the comments she made criticizing cyclocross “part-timers,” such as Marianne Vos and Ferrand-Prévot, who tend to start the season late, after finishing the road season.
In June, Cant was hospitalized due to a nasty crash when a tractor pulled out in front of her motorpacing vehicle. Not surprisingly, her 2015-16 World Cup season started slowly—she was third at CrossVegas and fourth at Valkenberg. But the Enertherm-BKCP rider won the first four rounds of the Superprestige series as well as the European Championship in November, showing that she was back on track.
