The 2002 Pro Cycling Tour (PCT) schedule was announced Wednesday, and it has a decidedly different look than last year’s series. In a move toward more high-profile events in major U.S. cities, the PCT has dropped the Sea Otter Classic, the Downtown Criterium in Austin, and two East Coast events, the Capital Cup and Clarendon Cup, from this year’s season-long points competition.
On the schedule again this year are the four races that constitute the First Union Cycling Series in June, culminating with the stars-and-stripes weekend of the men’s First Union USPRO Championship and women’s First Union Liberty Classic in Philadelphia.
Another attempt will be made this year to launch an inaugural New York City Cycling Championship — set for August 4th — less than a week after the Tour de France finish in Paris. The U.S. Postal Team is again scheduled to appear at the race, which was originally scheduled last year but postponed due to logistical problems.
Also returning to the series in 2002 is the San Francisco Grand Prix, September 15, preceded by the women’s San Rafael Cycling Classic the previous day. The season finale Miami Cycling Classic will run on September 28-29.
The Pro Cycling Tour is owned and managed by Philadelphia-based Threshold Sports, and sanctioned by USA Cycling. Official sponsors for the 2002 Pro Cycling Tour are BMC Software, the United States Postal Service and Mavic.
