2015 Buyer’s Guide: Aero road

When the chips are down, and its time to make the break, you need to cheat the wind. That's where these five bikes come in handy

Don't miss a moment from Paris-Roubaix and Unbound Gravel, to the Giro d’Italia, Tour de France, Vuelta a España, and everything in between when you join Outside+.

$5,750 (frameset),

Pinarello developed the Dogma F8 in conjunction with Team Sky and Jaguar. Pinarello’s Kamm-tail tube shape was developed through wind-tunnel testing with Jaguar to be as aerodynamic as possible while retaining the ride characteristics Pinarello is known for. The fork smooths airflow around the front wheel to optimize stability while the frame helps reduce turbulence further back. The F8 is a claimed 12 percent stiffer than its predecessor, the Dogma 65.1, 47 percent more aerodynamic, yet 120 grams lighter.

Frame: Carbon fiber; internal cable routing; Italian-threaded bottom bracket
Fork: Carbon fiber
Component Highlights: N/A
Weight: 860 grams (54cm frame without paint)

The S3 is the workhorse of the Cervélo line-up, always ready to meet the demands of the toughest riders. You’ll notice the necessary stiffness in the head tube and bottom bracket, outstanding ride quality, internal cable routing, and clearance for 25mm tires.
 Even better, you get all these upgrades without a weight or
aero compromise versus the classic S3.

Frame: Carbon fiber; tapered head tube; BBright
bottom bracket; reduced-friction BB cable guide;
partial seat tube cutout; carbon dropouts
Fork: Carbon fiber; tire clearance up to 25mm
Component Highlights: Shimano Ultegra Di2;
 Rotor 3D30 crankset; Mavic Cosmic Elite S wheelset;
 3T ARX Pro stem; 3T Ergonova Pro handlebar; Fizik
 Antares saddle
Weight: 16.5 lb (1,100 grams for frame)

$4,750 (frameset),

The V1-r is the lightest, most aerodynamic, and strongest frame Colnago has ever built. Designed in Italy, in close partnership with Ferrari, the V1-r utilizes truncated tube shapes, along with a proprietary
 seatpost and provisions for post-mount brakes, to improve aerodynamics. The V1-r uses the same race-winning
 geometry Colnago is renowned for, without sacrificing
rider comfort or safety.

Frame: Carbon fiber; Colnago ThreadFit 82.5 (BB86)
bottom-bracket; direct-mount brakes
Fork: Carbon fiber
Component Highlights: N/A
Weight: 835 grams (frame)

The TMR02 brings world-class aerodynamic performance within reach. The frame ditches the TMR01’s integrated brakes in the fork, which we aren’t fans of anyway, but retains its stiffness and responsiveness. This is a bike that’s fast both in the wind tunnel and on the road.

Frame: Carbon fiber; BB86 bottom bracket; internal cable routing; truncated aero tube shapes
Fork: Carbon fiber
Component Highlights: Shimano 105 11-speed; proprietary rear brake; Shimano WH-RS010 wheelset; BMC cockpit and seatpost; Fizik Ardea saddle
Weight: 1,200 grams (frame and fork)

The AR3 is cut from the same mold as the flagship Felt AR FRD, and is among the fastest road frames we have ever put in the wind tunnel. It offers a no-compromise ride quality despite all of the aero advantages, and at a price that’s attainable. According to Felt, over 40 kilometers, at an average of 300 watts, the AR will save well over a minute compared to an identically spec’d Felt F1 road bike. The reversible seatpost gives the rider the ability to use the AR in multiple
disciplines, allowing the rider to easily change saddle
 setback for time trials.

Frame: Carbon fiber; BB30 bottom bracket; carbon
 fiber dropouts; reversible seatpost; internal cable
Fork: Carbon fiber
Component Highlights: Shimano Ultegra 6800;
 Shimano Ultegra Direct Mount rear brake; Shimano
 RS31 wheelset; 3T ARX II stem; 3T Tornova handlebar;
 Prologo Zero II T2.0 saddle
Weight: 18.1 lb (56cm)
