Shimano offers a look at 2007 XTR braking options

While XTR shifting systems made waves at last month?s Sea Otter Classic, Shimano left us in the dark concerning the details of the rest of the group. Still we don?t have the whole story, but Shimano has now offered a look at the new braking options the group will offer. The two most interesting features of the new system are the perpendicular or radial master cylinder on the brake lever and new mono-body design on the calipers. The two most interesting features of the new system are the perpendicular or radial master cylinder on the brake lever and new mono-body design on the calipers. The new lever design frees up space on the bar and provides for a smoother modulating brake, while the single forged mono-body caliper lightens the system and provides for more consistent performance.

The new Centerlock rotors feature a new carrier, but most interesting is the availability of a wide range of rotor sizes, ranging from 203mm to a rear specific 140mm.

Shimano has always been a stickler for detail, and that shows through on the new group. The new lever features a textured brake lever for better grip, while the master cylinder cap is upgraded from plastic to alloy. Remarkably, the redesigned brake pads feature a titanium backer plate, dropping 12 grams. The new pads are also said to offer a 50-percent improvement in durability.

In addition to the new disc brakes, Shimano is keeping the V-Brake alive for traditionalists and gram counters. The redesigned XTR V-Brake has been refined for maximum tire clearance and uniform pad pressure. Likewise the V-lever has also been refined, incorporating Servo Wave technology. The lever uses a dual leverage ratio, which gets the pad to the rim quicker then ramps up the ratio for maximum braking power.
