The Fenix is only nominally an endurance bike. Sure, it’s designed to help riders get over bumpy roads. But those riders are racers, and those bumps are cobbles. This is the frame that team Lotto – Soudal takes to the northern classics.
The Fenix uses thin stays and a narrow 27.2-millimeter seatpost to build in some compliance, can take up to 30-millimeter tires, and has a (very slightly) relaxed geometry. But it also boasts aerodynamic touches on its leading edges and a bottom bracket that can handle the fastest finish-line sprints in the world. This is a comfort race bike.
We stood up on the pedals at 22 percent grades and dove into tight, high-speed corners and couldn’t get the frame to budge. The Ultegra Di2 build is, of course, a crowd pleaser, and, like the Fenix frame, Fulcrum’s Racing 5 wheels balance the demands of racing with a nod toward comfort.
If you ride gran fondos simply to finish, the Fenix will probably be a bit too harsh. But if you ride them to be competitive, this is worth a look.
