Oakley launched its helmet line in late 2017 into a crowded market. In order to contend, the new lids needed to be as good, if not better, than its competition. The Aro5 makes a strong case that Oakley’s mission has been accomplished.

While the looks may be polarizing, we like it. The Aro5 shares enough characteristics with high-end aero-road helmets, while still setting itself apart visually. And really, if you’re a racer, aesthetics should come second to performance anyway.

As such, the Boa retention system impresses for its micro-adjustability and lay-flat, soft fabric cable that doesn’t interfere with your eyewear. Slots within the helmet’s EPS foam allow you to quickly and securely stow your glasses.

And Oakley makes aero claims that the Aro5 is competitive with the fastest helmets on the market. We weren’t able to test the helmet in the wind tunnel, so we can’t confirm or deny.

We weren’t wowed with the venting, though. If you’re after a cooler helmet, check out Oakley’s Aro3, which is more tailored for hot days and long climbs.
