Everything we love about the rim-brake SuperSix EVO remains unchanged, and that’s a good thing. This remains one of the most nimble, versatile race bikes on the planet, and is only improved by the addition of discs.
In addition to improving braking, the discs increase tire clearance. That takes an already well-rounded, versatile road bike into new territory, easily able to clear a 28mm tire and ready to take on some mid-week shenanigans as well as the weekend crit.
The EVO is surprisingly comfortable on any scale and incredibly comfortable for a race bike. That may stand out as the bike’s greatest accomplishment — a race bike that’s truly comfortable. But the SuperSix is still stiff where you need it. The solid front end (.51mm head tube deflection) and 56mm trail figure provide confident, predictable handling. Get out of the saddle and there is little noticeable flex (.56mm BB deflection).
Funny how traditional, horizontal top tops now look old school. But we like it. The EVO looks and feels and rides like a frills-free race bike.
The model we tested was a bit on the heavy side, over 17 pounds, but don’t blame that entirely on the disc brakes. Those Aksium wheels leave a bit to be desired. They’re bombproof, true, but if you’re racing you’ll want to find something nimbler, lighter, and more aerodynamic.
If you’re after a well-rounded race bike — which will now easily fit a 28mm tire for those more adventurous off-race days — the chosen rig of Cannondale-Drapac is a solid bet.
