Thomas — In his first race on American soil, Belgian Thomas De Gendt rode his way into multiple breakaways at the Amgen Tour of California, supplying ample TV coverage of his Bianchi Oltre XR and his Vacansoleil-DCM team’s special edition jerseys. Thomas — De Gendt said before the race he was hoping for a top-10 GC finish, but would hunt for stage wins if he wasn’t in contention. He spurred an attack on the final stage that finished in Santa Rosa, but his three-man break faltered because of a mechanical issue that required a bike change about halfway through the race.
