Santa Cruz Bicycles is jumping head first into the 29er world with the new Tallboy. No you can’t drink it, but it will probably still give you a pretty good buzz.
The Tallboy will have a full carbon, monocoque construction, VPP rear suspension and is designed to fit a 100m or 120mm front fork.
The Tallboy is the third carbon bike by Santa Cruz and the crew there isn’t cutting any corners. The development team chose not to use tube-to-tube construction, believing a lower weight and stiffer design could be achieved using a monocoque mold. Each triangle, front and rear, uses a single carbon lay-up and single bladder to shape the tubes.
The Virtual Pivot Point rear suspension is designed for 100mm of travel. Total frame weight including the rear shock is expected to be around five pounds, which is truly impressive for a full-suspension 29er.
The Tallboy will live up to its name with sizes ranging from medium (17.7-inches) to XXL (22.5-inches).
Santa Cruz is still deciding on the final spec for the Tallboy, but expects to have frames ready for the public by November. MSRP for the Tallboy frame and Rock Shox Monarch 3.3 rear shock is expected to be $2,350. – Robbie Stout
