To tame road vibrations, Look engineers sandwiched layers of flax fibers — yes, flax — between carbon sheets in strategic areas of the 765 frame.

Whether or not the flax fibers dampen vibrations as advertised, our testers did note that the 765 felt transmitted more road chatter than most endurance bikes. But they were also universal in praising the bike’s stable, predictable ride qualities. Said one: “If someone wants to get into road riding, this would be an ideal first bike.” That’s not meant as faint praise. It’s an acknowledgement of just how balanced the 765 is. Here’s an upright carbon frame that feels twitchy at the bottom bracket but steady up front.

In fact, the 765’s handling is a bit too slow. With its slack 72-degree head tube, the bike is prone to a touch of understeer. Definitely not a crit bike, (though it can handle sudden accelerations as well as a pure racer). But for hours-long adventures and gran fondo-type rides, the decidedly upright geometry is very gentle on the spine, and the Shimano Ultegra build is as dependable as it gets. The 765 just works.

Component highlights: Shimano Ultegra drivetrain with 50/34 crankset and 11-32 cassette; Shimano Ultegra brakes; Mavic Aksium wheels
