The Hunt 30Carbon Gravel Disc wheelset is versatile, robust, and caters to the needs of the modern rider — someone who is looking for one wheelset to tackle the demands of gravel roads, ’cross races, maybe even some bikepacking, and most definitely rougher or unimproved roads.
The 4 Season Disc hub is mated to a 30-millimeter deep carbon rim with 28 spokes, rated for riders up to 250 pounds. All of this for under 1,500 grams.
The rim features unidirectional T24/30 carbon fiber with 3K weave reinforced spoke holes. The wide, aero-rounded profile delivers excellent handling and speed. The rim dimensions are generous at 27mm (21mm internal), which creates a robust tire profile, especially when running 28-50-millimeter rubber. That means excellent grip and lower rolling resistance.
The 28 spokes are laced two-cross front and rear, making for a strong, stiff build. We’ve tested them on everything from pavement to dirt to gravel, and we’ve experienced zero issues in terms of build quality.
Hunt has taken advantage of the fact that disc-brake rims are not required to handle the high temperatures induced by prolonged rim braking. It pre-impregnates its proprietary V:Absorbe resin into the carbon, which then cures at a lower temperature. The claim? Lower temperature resins are less brittle, meaning they have greater resistance to impacts and dampen vibration more effectively. This is great for the intended use of these wheels, which will see them kicking around the rough roads and gravel trails in your neck of the woods.
Hunt also utilizes its H-Lock tubeless-ready rim bed profile with ramps to the shoulders of the tubeless steps, which help to create a great rim-well seal for first installation and easy sealing of tubeless tires. The H-Lock profile also locks the beads in place more securely once seated. This is especially important when running low pressures off road.
Butted aero spokes are mated to anodized black forged and CNC’d 6061-T6 heat treated aluminum alloy hubs. Inside, high-grade, smooth rolling sealed cartridge bearings by EZO Japan round out the details of the wheelset. In back, four pawl, 28-tooth engagement makes tidy work when getting up to speed.
With that level of attention to detail, it’s no surprise the Hunt wheels come in at a light 1,484 grams. There are few, if any, disc brake wheels that are designed for the rigors of gravel or heavy-duty road that deliver like the 30Carbon Gravel Disc.
Hunt makes dealing with the compatibility issues of modern wheel shopping easy by shipping the 30Carbon wheels with standard QR endcaps as well as 12mm thru-axle adaptors for the front wheel. The company can supply 9mm, 12mm, or 15mm thru-axle adaptors as needed. There are also Campagnolo and SRAM XD freehub adaptors available. The hubs are designed for Shimano Centerlock rotors but Hunt includes six-bolt adaptors as well.
