MOL, Belgium (VN) — Zdenek Stybar (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) won the Boonen and Friends charity cyclocross on Saturday.

Held at the Zilvermeer in Mol, Belgium, the charity race raises funds for “Move to Improve,” which supports children with neuromotor disorders such as cerebral palsy.

The event’s namesake, Tom Boonen, was unable to participate in the fourth running of the event, as the Belgian sprinter was suffering from an intestinal ailment that saw him hospitalized for three days.

But his teammate proved an excellent stand-in — the two-time world cyclocross champion won the race despite starting a minute behind the rest of the field.

Maarten Wynants finished second with Pieter Vanspeybrouck third.

“That was fun,” Stybar Tweeted afterward. “Thanks to all supporters.”
