Face it. The race for the yellow jersey at the Tour de France has been pretty much over for a week. No matter how many times someone has said, “Anything can happen,” the fact remained that Lance Armstrong put a stranglehold on the race lead in the mountain stages which concluded last week.

And Friday, he put the final exclamation mark on his win by putting in another dominant performance in the final individual time trial. But while the race between Armstrong and Jan Ullrich has been put to rest, there’s still another compelling battle that will come down to the final day in Paris.

In addition to the overall race in the Tour, there are other classifications — points competition, best climber, best young rider — and in the battle for the green points jersey, Telekom’s Erik Zabel crept ever closer to winning for the sixth year in a row when he won Saturday’s 149.5km Stage 19 from Orleans to Evry. The man he is chasing, Stuart O’Grady, barely clung to the lead by finishing second. O’Grady, though, has seen his lead shrink day after day in the final week, and he could see it disappear completely on Sunday’s final stage on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

Zabel has owned the green jersey for the past five years, the only man ever to win it that many times. But this year, he’s been challenged like never before. O’Grady took the points lead in the first week of the Tour, at the same time that he temporarily wore the yellow jersey for six days. As the race headed into the mountain stages, O’Grady led by 13 points. That’s not a lot, in a race where a stage win is worth 35 points, with points going down to 25th place, but during the mountain stages a road-weary Zabel knew he faced a big challenge in the final week.

“Stuart’s ridden very, very well,” said Zabel a week ago. “He’s put me under big pressure, and he’s very strong.”

But Zabel made it through those tough days in the mountains, and once the Tour hit flatter roads, he’s been chipping away at the lead.

With breakaway groups escaping almost every day, the 6-, 4- and 2-point intermediate bonus sprints in the middle of each stage didn’t come into play on Stages 15-17. However, in the end-of-stage field sprints it was Telekom’s Zabel leading the way: eighth on Wednesday, with O’Grady ninth; sixth on Thursday, with O’Grady seventh. And that pattern of the Australian right on the wheel of the German continued on Saturday.

This time, there were no day-long breakaway groups that would take away the intermediate sprint points, only a five-man breakaway that stayed out for 42km, in between the day’s sprint points at 62.5km and 125.5km. So the focus of the day was those intermediate points, and the finale in Evry.

At the first sprint, Crédit Agricole tried to play one of its cards, sending Jens Voigt on the attack 47km into the race. The hope, of course, was for Voigt to take the first-place bonus of six points, thus preventing Zabel from taking those points. The tactic worked … but it really didn’t. Voigt stayed away to take the six points, but the sprint behind saw a familiar result: Zabel second, with O’Grady just behind. O’Grady’s lead in the overall: 9 points.

For the second sprint, in the town of Itteville, Telekom played its hand, setting up a leadout train for Zabel, while O’Grady stuck right on the German’s wheel once again. There was little O’Grady’s team could do. A pair of Crédit Agricole’s French riders, Sebastien Hinault and Frédéric Bessy, launched attacks, but that didn’t even phase Telekom. With Telekom’s Alexandre Vinokourov providing the final leadout, Zabel took first, O’Grady second. O’Grady’s lead: 7 points.

With 20km to go, O’Grady suffered even more trouble, when he suffered a broken shifter cable. He was forced to switch onto teammate Chris Jenner’s bike, although that wasn’t his main problem. Zabel was.

Obviously, the tactic of sitting on Zabel’s wheel before each sprint wasn’t working for O’Grady. So in the final, O’Grady decided to try someone else, latching onto world champion Romans Vainsteins (Domo-Farm Frites) for the sprint. Different tactic, same result. Zabel crossed first, while O’Grady banged elbows with Vainsteins to squeak in for second place. Thirty-five points to Zabel for the win, 30 to O’Grady for second place. O’Grady’s lead: 2 points.

That 2-point lead could evaporate on the road on Sunday before the race even reaches the Champs-Elysees, with two intermediate sprints on the road from Evry to Paris. But whatever happens, it will all be decided in the final sprint on the Champs-Elysees.

“I just have to try and do whatever I can,” said O’Grady. “But whatever happens, I’m happy that I’ve at least been able to give Zabel the biggest challenge he’s ever had.”

So while Sunday will be another ceremonial coronation parade for Armstrong and his Postal teammates, it will be a battle royale for the green jersey.
