Yanks Down Under for track World Cup Classics

Twenty Americans will compete in the opening round of the 2007-08 UCI Track Cycling World Cup Classics, which runs from Friday through Sunday in Sydney, Australia. The U.S. national team and seven American pro track teams are among the 48 nations and 23 trade teams set to compete in the season’s first major international event, which factors into Olympic qualification. The U.S. national team and seven American pro track teams are among the 48 nations and 23 trade teams set to compete in the season’s first major international event, which factors into Olympic qualification. The U.S. national team includes Adam Duvendeck (Momentum), Brad Huff (Slipstream-Chipotle), Bobby Lea (Toyota-United), Giddeon Massie (T-Town Express), Dotsie Bausch (Colavita-Sutter Home-Cooking Light), Liz Reap (T-Town Express) and Becky Quinn (South Bay Wheelmen). The seven pro teams include the Cody Racing Team, Momentum Cycling, Ouch Pro Cycling, South Bay Wheelmen, Team Slipstream-Chipotle, Verducci Breakaway Racing and Proman Racing Team. Representing Ouch is Sarah Hammer, two-time defending world champion in the women’s 3kmr individual pursuit. The Cody Racing Team will consist of Michael Blatchford, 2004 U.S. Olympic Team member Colby Pearce and Kenny Williams. Athens Olympian Jennie Reed will be the sole representative of the Momentum Cycling Team while Neva Day and Christen King constitute the South Bay Wheelmen’s roster. Team Slipstream-Chipotle will feature 17-year-old Taylor Phinney, who captured an elite national title last month in his first-ever competitive track race, and Michael Friedman. David McCook, Shelley Olds and Kele Murdin will compete for the Proman Racing Team while the Verducci Breakaway Racing squad will feature former USA Cycling national criterium champion Theresa Cliff-Ryan. The World Cup opener in Sydney is the first of four UCI Track World Cup Classics, which also include the official Olympic Test Event December 7-9 at the Olympic velodrome in Beijing, as well as stops in Los Angeles in January and Denmark in February.
