Worlds: Balsamo wins women’s junior worlds, U.S. second

Italian Elisa Balsamo wins junior women's worlds in Doha, Qatar, sprinting home ahead of American Skylar Schneider.

Italian Elisa Balsamo won the junior women’s world road race championship race Friday in Doha, Qatar, sprinting home ahead of American Skylar Schneider who was second.

“Unbelievable.” said Balsamo. “A big thank you to my teammates. They were so beautiful and strong. It’s our title, not only mine. This is great, not only for us, but for the whole of Italian female cycling.”

Balsamo was led-out expertly by her Italian teammates, Letizia Paternoster and Lisa Morzenti, into the final kilometer.

Schneider was well-positioned on Balsamo’s wheel in the sprint, but could not come around in the final 100 meters. The 18-year-old came close to her first medal on Monday in the time trial but finished fourth, nine seconds out of third.

Norwegian Susanne Anderson rounded out the podium in third at the end of the 74.5km race.

The race was split very early by a large crash that saw 22 riders go clear. A few key pre-race favorites were forced to chase, off the back: Julliete Labous (France), Chloe Morgan (Australia), and Arianna Pruisscher (Netherlands).

Despite a few late moves on the final lap, including one by Spain’s Miriam Gardachal, the race stayed together for the sprint, from a peloton that had grown to 56 riders.

“The attacks were tough throughout the race. The whole peloton was moving closely. I narrowly avoided a crash in the first few kilometers. Elisa had a perfect ride out in the final stretch and she deserved to win,” said Andersen.
