Vuelta: Galdeano wins windy stage; Beloki holds lead

Strong crosswinds and tailwinds blasted the peloton in Sunday’s 179-km (111-mile) ninth stage of the Vuelta a España from Logrono to Zaragoza, splitting the race into echelons across the flats of northern Spain.

ONCE’s Igor Galdeano shot free of the lead group of 40 riders in the final three kilometres. He finished alone to earn his third career Vuelta stage victory as well as the record for the fastest-ever road race at an average speed of 55.17kph.

Teammate Joseba Beloki retained the overall lead Sunday and Galdeano says his ONCE team is reinvigorated following Beloki’s big ride Saturday and his victory Sunday.

“After Covadonga and the time trial, we thought the Vuelta was finished for ONCE. Our team manager told us to keep our heads up and if we attacked at Demanda on Saturday we would have a chance,” said Galdeano, second overall in 1999. “We reminded ourselves there are still many days left in this Vuelta and we ride with a lot of confidence.”

Strong winds blasted the racers from the start and the peloton split into four groups as riders struggled to hang on. The U.S. Postal Service team took control of the stage early on and put the hammer down to split the lead group.

“We knew it was going to be windy today and we were alert from the beginning. We saw a good opportunity to take control and gave it go. We had five guys in there really pulling hard for 60 kilometers,” said American Levi Leipheimer, now fifth overall at 1:54 back. “The team forced some of the other guys to work really hard today. Roberto (Heras) and I never had any trouble. We didn’t have to do any work.”

Festina then stepped up and split the lead group down about 20 riders, which included defending Vuelta champion Heras, Leipheimer, Kelme’s Oscar Sevilla and Santiago Botero and Cofidis’ David Millar.

“The winds of Spain are different. There is no vegetation or anything to block the winds, so the gusts can be strong and can even blow people off the road,” said Pedro Delgado, a two-time Vuelta champion and Spanish TV commentator. “The riders are always very nervous in stages like this because they know if they’re not in the first group, they can lose minutes and their chances for victory can be finished.”

Several riders missed out as the peloton split into groups, likely spoiling their chances for the final podium.

“Today you can cut people like (Fernando) Escartin or (Roberto) Laiseka out of the overall. We went strong today to take advantage of opportunities like that,” said Festina’s Angel Casero, now in third-place overall at 54 seconds back. “I think if I can survive the next few days in the Pyrenees in good position I can still win this Vuelta.”

The only thing that’s clear after the opening nine days of the Vuelta is that it’s still anybody’s race. No rider has been able to take firm control of the overall lead, which has changed hands five times in nine days.

Beloki’s lead over second-place Oscar Sevilla is only 14 seconds and seven riders remain within three minutes of the leader.

Leipheimer says all is not lost for Heras, who’s sitting in 8th overall at 2:47 back … Heras couldn’t pull it off when he tried to attack in Saturday’s climbing stage to Alto de la Demanda.

“Roberto still has a big chance. If you look at his past couple of tours, he always comes on strong in the later stages,” Leipheimer said. “He’s the defending champion and we’re all working for him.”

And what about Leipheimer as a team leader if Heras falters?

“This is all new territory for me. I knew coming into the Vuelta I was feeling strong and with a lot of confidence,” said Leipheimer, who lost three kilos to enter the Vuelta at 61 kilograms. “I’m really looking forward to the climbing time trial (on Thursday).”

Riders take a break Monday in the first of two rest days. Whoever comes out on top after three consecutive days of summit finishes in the Pyrenees from Tuesday to Thursday has the best chance of winning the 56th Vuelta.
