Two more big names are confirmed for the Vuelta a España with Michele Scarponi (Lampre-ISD) and Jurgen Van den Broeck.
Both Lampre and Omega Pharma-Lotto revealed their Vuelta Nine as the season’s third grand tour looms later this month with a TTT start in Benidorm on August 20.
Scarponi, runner-up at the Giro d’Italia in May, will be the leader of the Italian squad. The Italian has twice raced the Vuelta (13th in 2003 and 11th in 2005) and will be one of the favorites for the final podium.
Alessandro Petacchi will also be returning to the Vuelta in search of stage victories in the mass sprints. Petacchi won a stage last year in stage 7 and pulled out two days later.
Petacchi will use the Vuelta to prepare for what’s a likely shot at the world title in Copenhagen, though the Italian worlds team has not yet been finalized.
Van den Broeck, meanwhile, will be looking salvage his season following his unfortunate early exit from the Tour de France with a crash before hitting the mountains.
Team brass are hopeful the Belgian can reach the final podium when the Vuelta ends September 11 in Madrid.
