Meanwhile, American Levi Leipheimer of Rabobank, had his bestday yet at his first Tour de France. After struggling on the steep slopsat the foot of the Ventoux he finished strongly to vault from 12th intoninth place on GC.

Conditions for the race were perfect, with hot sunshine tempered bya light breeze that gained in strength at the end of the long day. Recordcrowds thronged the narrow roads that led from the foothills of the Cévennes, past the vineyards of the Côtes du Rhône, to the mountain theycall the Giant of Provence.

Early breakaways
Four years after he and his Festina team were banned from the Tourafter their director admitted to systematic doping in his squad, and 21months after he confessed in a courtroom to having used the blood boosterEPO, Virenque redeemed himself in the eyes of his many French supporters.

The former King of the Mountains put himself in a position to win thestage by making sure he was in the early breakaways. First he joined a12-man that formed on the opening climb out of Lodève. That didn’twork because the break contained CSC-Tiscali’s Tyler Hamilton andex-Giro d’Italia winner Ivan Gotti of Alessio. Armstrong’s Postalteam chased down the break at kilometer 18.

One kilometer later, on a plateau road preceding a steep switchbackdescent into the Vif River canyon, Virenque was at the heart of an 11-manmove that would remain at the front for the remaining 202km. It was similarto the marathon break that Virenque made with French hope Sylvain Chavanelto win the Paris-Tours classic last October.

A long day in the sun
The 10 riders with Virenque in the breakaway were Mikel Pradera(ONCE), Thor Hushovd and Anthony Morin (both CréditAgricole), Marco Velo (Fassa Bortolo), Dariusz Baranowski (iBanesto.com),Marco Serpellini (Lampre-Daikin), Alexander Botcharov (AG2R),Cristian Moreni (Alessio), and Stéphane Augé andChristophe Edaleine (both Jean Delatour).

The long, dangerous decent starting at kilometer 24 favored the breakaways, and after covering 44.9km in the opening hour, the 11 leaders were 4:30ahead of the peloton. The Postal team rode a steady tempo for the nextseveral hours uphill and down on roads of melting tar that often took themunder long canopies of plain trees through picturesque stone-built villages. When the gap reached 11:45 on passing through St. Hippolyte-du-Fort at63km, Armstrong’s teammates stepped up their pace and maintained the gapat around 11 minutes for the next two hours.

By the time the Ventoux mountain came into view across the RhôneValley on cresting a ridge just after Châteauneuf-du-Pape (160km),the gap dropped below 10 minutes. With 25km to go, the lead was down to7:50, and on reaching the foot of the mighty Ventoux with 21km of savageclimbing left, it was 7:10.

Was the margin enough?
Besides Virenque, the best climber in the breakaway group was the littleRussian, Botcharov. Halfway up the climb, between three-deep crowds ofcheering fans, these two split from the rest, and then 10km from the 6273-footsummit. Virenque shot away in pursuit of the stage win.  At the line,he was 1:58 ahead of runner-up Botcharov, and still 2:20 ahead of Armstrong, who bolted away from his rivals with 7km to go.

It was soon down to a familiar list of major players - Rubiera, Armstrong and Beloki.

Armstrong a happy man
Armstrong chose a perfect moment to make his decisive attack. Afterhis Spanish teammate José Luis (“Chechu”) Rubiera had splitthe chase group with a sustained effort up the long, straight pitches ofbetween 9 and 15 percent in the middle part of the  Ventoux, onlyfour riders were left with the race leader: Beloki, and his Portugueseteammate José Azevedo, Lithuanian revelation RaimondasRumsas of Lampre-Daikin, and the impressive Italian  Ivan Bassoof Fassa Bortolo — the leader of the best young rider competition.,

On a particularly steep turn, Beloki attacked with everything he had, trying to catch out Armstrong who had drifted to the back of the smallgroup. For a moment it looked like the young Spanish rider’s move mightsucceed, but all it did was spur Armstrong into action.

“I was waiting for the race to open up,” Armstrong said later. “I’msure [Beloki] had heard [on his radio] I was at the back of the group and[ONCE directeur sportif] Monolo [Saiz] told him to attack. I’m sure. I’mglad someone attacked. It was good for us….”

At the moment of his stunning attack, Armstrong was 4:38 behind Virenque. He would have had to make up 40 seconds a kilometer to have caught thestill-popular French rider. He gained at half that rate — which was stilla remarkable achievement.

Armstrong confirmed, “I rode as good as I could today but Richard Virenquewas strong. It’s hard to attack alone and he showed amazing strength. Hedeserves it. We’re happy with what we did today as we took time out ofour rivals.”

The yellow jersey didn’t appreciate the boos
Among the roars of support for Armstrong, particularly from the hundredsof American fans who lined the steep mountain road, there was also a chorusof derisive jeers greeting the Texan dominator.

What did he think of this mixed reception? “It’s disappointing to behonest,” he said. “The people were not sportsmanlike. The boos are louderthan the cheers. If I was given a dollar for every dopé, dopé,I would be a rich man.”

“I really don’t care,” he added. “And I won’t care when I’m on a beachwith my kids drinking a cold beer in a few years’ time.”

Armstrong’s advice to these fickle fans was: “Don’t come to the raceto boo the riders. It’s a question of class; it’s not the way a classyperson acts.”

Levi and Tyler both top 20
After finishing in 11th place on the stage, 2:06 behind Armstrong,Leipheimer told VeloNews: “I was suffering at the bottom (of MontVentoux). Normally, I suffer at the bottom and get better at the top, andif I’m the slightest bit conservative in the overall climb, I’m fasterif I don’t push myself too hard at the bottom.

“That’s what I did. When Chechu [Rubiera] started to set tempo, I saidI can’t do this right now. But I felt like I had a lot left. I just couldn’tpush right there at that moment. And sure enough I pushed through the badmoment, and I started getting momentum and come back to some guys.

“My motivation [got] higher, and that’s another gear. I passed a lotof guys … and [with Ivan Gotti] we were coming back to Lance’s group. Infact we were probably 20 meters from Lance and I saw him attack.”

What did Leipheimer think of his 11th place on the stage (sixth bestof the riders high on GC)? “I was pretty happy. It was a very good climbfor me. It gives me a lot of morale because I think now, ‘I can do this.’It’s been kind of an unknown for me to come to the Tour de France, andI think today I showed I have potential.”

As for Tyler Hamilton, he came in eight place behind Leipheimer, in19th, 4:47 to Armstrong. It was enough to keep Hamilton in the top 20 —19th to be exact, 18:59 down.
