Jolien Verschueren added a big win to her 2015 palmares Sunday at Vlaamse Druivencross Overijse.
The 25-year-old triumphed ahead of Helen Wyman (Kona Factory Racing), who led the race for multiple laps before losing ground to Verschueren. Verschueren’s Telenet-Fidea teammate Nikki Harris nabbed third after a late mechanical slowed a surging Sanne Cant.
Wyman jumped out to an early lead with a strong opening lap, staying in the saddle on a tough, muddy climb that forced most of her rivals to dismount. She opened up a gap of several seconds, but Harris was able to close down most of the advantage down by the first passing of the finish line, with Verschueren and Cant among a select group in hot pursuit.
Verschueren and then Cant caught and passed Harris before long, with Wyman in their sights, setting up an apparent three-rider battle for the win. But Cant suffered a mechanical that left her unable to deliver power to the pedals, effectively taking her out of contention.
Verschueren finally gapped Wyman for good on the last lap and held on to seal the victory. Wyman crossed the line to nab runner-up honors a few seconds behind. Harris overtook Cant to round out the podium.
