The Tour de France resumed on Tuesday, following the mountains and Monday’s rest day, and with Lance Armstrong having all but wrapped up the yellow jersey, the race was once again turned over to the opportunists in the peloton. Headbangers. Donkeys. Call them what you want. The breakaway artists were at it again on Stage 15, and Lotto’s Rik Verbrugghe grabbed the stage win after an escape of more than 100 miles.

The longest day of the Tour, a 232.5km west-to-east journey from Pau to Lavaur, began on a sour note, as American Jonathan Vaughters (Crédit Agricole) abandoned the race. Vaughters was stung by a wasp on a Monday training ride and had an allergic reaction. Unable to take a cortisone injection because of UCI regulations, Vaughters began the day with the entire right side of his face swollen, and his right eye closed shut. He began Tuesday’s stage, but after the first few kilometers had to withdraw. “Try driving your car with a hand over one eye,” he said. “That is what it was like.”

Vaughters wasn’t helped by a race that saw numerous attacks in the early going, and a difficult up-and-down course profile, which featured short hill after short hill on a long day.

After a number of early attacks, a group of 25 riders gained a small lead at the 66km mark, and it turned out to be a favorable combination. The highest placed rider of the 25 was Rabobank’s Michael Boogerd, who began the day in 16th place, more than a half-hour behind. And with 17 different teams represented in the breakaway, all those squads trying for a stage win seemed to be happy. Among the key names in the break were Boogerd and teammate Erik Dekker (Rabobank); Verbrugghe; Nicolas Jalabert (CSC-Tiscali); Danielle Nardello (Mapei-Quick Step); stage 12 winner Felix Cardenas (Kelme-Costa Blanca); and American Bobby Julich (Crédit Agricole), who despite disappointment in the mountain stages, continued his aggressive riding into the final week of the race.

Tuesday’s route went over a beautiful combination of narrow one-lane rural roads in the middle of the French countryside over rolling hills, and bigger, two-lane roads lined with the famous roadside shade trees of France. On those roads, the lead group began to build its lead, and with only token chasing from behind, saw it grow to more than 10 minutes over the next 70km.

There was some token chasing by Armstrong’s Postal team, as well as some effort by Kelme, which was hoping to protect the top-10 overall standing of Oscar Sevilla and Santiago Botero. But for the most part, the peloton was content to let the 25 have their day.

All went smoothly on a sweltering day until about 35km to go, when the infighting began in the breakaway. At that point, a group of five took off, only to be chased down, with Julich doing much of the chasing. Shortly after, though, Lampre’s Marco Pinotti attacked, and his move caused things to split up. He was chased by Verbrugghe and Franck Renier (Bonjour), who were followed by Nardello and Gilles Bouvard (Jean Delatour), but only Verbrugghe could make the junction, with 13km to go.

From there, it became two against 23, as Verbrugghe and Pinotti worked hard on the long, slightly-downhill, tree-lined road into Lavaur. The lead was never more than 20 seconds, and with 1km to go the group of 23 had the leaders in sight, but Pinotti and Verbrugghe were able to hold them off.

Then, with 200 meters to go, Verbrugghe easily jumped around the Italian to score the win.

It was a big win for Lotto, which was one of the late “wild-card” selections into the Tour, and needed a good showing to justify the choice. Verbrugghe, who had won the prologue at the Tour of Italy in May, had hoped for a similar performance at the beginning of the Tour de France, and the yellow jersey to go along with it. Those plans were derailed, however, when he was hit by a car the week before the race. “I had terrible headaches for a couple of days, and didn’t feel well in the prologue,” he said. “Then, I crashed in Strasbourg too. So today’s really a great victory.”

With the main peloton finishing more than 15 minutes behind, Boogerd did indeed move into the top eight overall, while Julich benefited as well, moving up to 21st.
