MADRID (AFP) — Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) won the final stage and the overall at the Vuelta Andalucía Ruta Ciclista del Sol (Tour
Valverde, who won Sunday’s prologue, retained the leader’s jersey through the 183km fourth and final stage, between Lucena and Rincon de la Victoria.
Simon Spilak (Katusha) was second overall, with veteran Davide Rebellin (Polsat Polkowice).
“Honestly, we couldn’t have closed this race in a better way,” said Valverde. “I think that this is my best ever start for a season, and I’m the first one who is surprised about that. I cannot say I’m not well, because you can’t win in bad form, but I wasn’t expecting to do so well here.”
