Valkenburg: De Jong takes a convincing World Cup win

De Jong kicks off the European leg of the World Cup with a Valkenburg victory

Thalita De Jong (Rabobank – Liv) opened the European leg of the World Cup in style Sunday, cruising to victory in Valkenburg. The 22-year-old world champ from the Netherlands soloed to a clear win in just under 42 minutes after five laps on home turf.

Fellow Dutchwoman Sophie De Boer (Kalas – NNOF) snagged runner-up honors, while Sanne Cant (Enertherm – BKCP) took third.

It took a few minutes for the top contenders to shed the field on a chilly but clear day in the Netherlands. Riders began to line out eventually, however, with the race splitting into groups by the end of the first lap.

De Jong began applying pressure and then got clear off the front of affairs with around two laps to go. Despite the caliber of riders in pursuit, she seemed untouchable once she got away — and the hard work of chasing saw groups breaking apart behind the race leader.

The reigning world champion cruised through the final lap and crossed the line to take the win with no one else in sight on the finishing straight. 26 seconds later, De Boer arrived at the finish to take second place, with Cant rounding out the podium a further nine seconds down.

“Sophie was technically better, but I found I could accelerate in the straights,” de Jong said. “I kept putting pressure on and in the last lap I could still hold a gap. It’s very nice to win a World Cup race here, at home.”
