U23 worlds: Norway’s Halvorsen sprints to victory

The 165.7km race ends in a massive sprint finish in Doha, Qatar.

Norwegian Kristoffer Halvorsen snagged a victory in the under-23 men’s road race at the UCI road worlds Thursday. “My teammates were so good, they’ve been working so hard, I’m incredibly happy,” Halvorsen said. “The course was perfect for me and this was my biggest goal for this season.”

Halvorsen, 20, finished the 165.7-kilometer race in 3:40:53, crossing the line just ahead of German Pascal Ackermann and Italian Jakub Mareczko.

The 20-year-old is the third Norwegian to win under-23 championships after Kurt Asle Arvesen and Sven Erik Bystrøm in 1997 and 2014, respectively. Norway is now even with France in the U23 road race medal count, both second behind Italy, which has four rainbow jerseys.

For their part, the Italians were not a significant factor in the final sprint. “The team helped me throughout the race. In the final kilometer my teammate suffered a fall. I could sprint well only in the last 150 meters, but it was too late. I’m still happy with the bronze,” Mareczko said.

The race was bookended by crashes, with two pile-ups happening in the first five kilometers on roundabouts.

Although flat course was tailor-made for a sprint finish, there was a breakaway that stayed off the front until the final 10 kilometers, which included American Gregory Daniel and eight others. Portugal’s Nuno Bico crashed out of the lead group early, but otherwise, they worked well together, accruing a three-minute advantage. Britain, Spain, Norway, and Kazakhstan all worked on the front to bring the escapees back in the final lap of racing around the Pearl island.

“It was a very hot sprint,” Halvorsen added, speaking of the heat in Doha, Qatar. “I managed to take the wheel of [Ackermann] and everything went well.”

Ackermann challenged the Norwegian all the way to the line, but had to settle for silver. “The race was tough and fast. The final sprint was a little too long for me. But I’m happy with how I did,” said the German.

After this first road race event of worlds week, mass-start events continue Friday with the men’s and women’s junior road races.
