American riders won five medals, including three golds. at the 2010 Pan American Road and Track Championships this weekend in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Ben King (Trek-Livestrong) won both the U23 men’s time trial and road race while Shelley Evans (Peanut Butter & Co. Twenty12) won the elite women’s road race.
Former world champion Amber Neben (USA) won the silver medal in the women’s 20km race, three seconds off the winning pace of 29:28 set by Colombian Ana Paola Madrinan. Evans was third, 53 seconds behind Madrinan.
King kicked off his successful weekend by time trialing his way to the top of the U23 men’s podium, followed by Ramiro Cabrera (Uraguay) and Ramon Carretero (Panama). King’s time of 55:14 put King ninth in the elite men’s race.
Sunday saw King repeat his success in the 171.6km U23 and elite men’s road race. King won the U23 gold medal by more than six minutes ahead of silver and bronze medalists Jonathan Monsalve (Venezuela) and Cabrera. He also placed 10th in the elite men’s race.
The U.S. women controlled the 93km road race from the start, pulling back a two-person break that stayed away for several laps. Evans outsprinted silver and bronze medalists Joelle Numanville (Canada) and Dalila Rodriguez (Cuba) by several bike lengths at the finish.
The track racing portion of the Pan American Road and Track Championships gets underway on Tuesday.
